CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Katsuie Shibata
Age: In his early to mid-20s
Canon: Sengoku Basara 4
Canon Point: Drama Route, before facing Nobunaga at Honnouji

Character Information:
Katsuie was serving as a general of the Demon King, Nobunaga Oda, when he fell in love with Nobunaga's sister, Oichi. Despite Katsuie's interest and his loyalty, Nobunaga decided to marry Oichi to Nagamasa Azai instead for political and strategic advantage. Katsuie fell into despair at the futility of it all, but somehow his suffering earned the attention of the shogun. Yoshiteru Ashikaga was a strange man with strange whims and often the inner workings of his mind were a great mystery, so why exactly he decided to incite Katsuie into rebellion against Nobunaga is somewhat of a mystery. Suffice to say once the possibility of rebellion was raised to him, it became a burning obsession for Katsuie.

Katsuie saw rebellion as his way to gain Oichi for himself. A mere general couldn't kill Nobunaga and take his sister's hand, but a king had limitless possibilities before him. If Katsuie could become a king like Nobunaga or Hideyoshi, there was nothing that he couldn't have. He proclaimed himself the "Phantom King" and led his army right to Nobunaga.

Only to have them utterly obliterated.

Katsuie was nothing in the face of a man so powerful and cruel as Nobunaga. His army and his spirit were crushed utterly and, to add insult to injury, Nobunaga allowed Katsuie to rejoin the Oda army as if nothing had ever happened. By not punishing Katsuie at all, he broke his spirit even more. He made it clear to him that, despite all he had done, he wasn't even worth punishing. It is there, some time after his rebellion, that his story mode begins. Katsuie suffers the abuse of the other soldiers as he is deployed to battle after battle until being ordered to Oshu to attack the Date clan. (This is where his Drama Route branches off.)

When Katsuie fights Masamune, he becomes angry and almost childishly despairing when Masamune calls himself the "Dragon King." He can't accept that anyone else might succeed at being a king where he failed and he attacks Masamune with all he has, though he is still defeated. Masamune, however, is impressed by his spirit and points out to him that he can fight hard enough to live, that must mean he still must have a will to survive. This is enough to bolster Katsuie's confidence and Masamune decides to aid him in taking down Nobunaga once and for all (though who is aiding who depends on who you ask.) They travel together to Honnouji and fight through the Oda and Akechi troops to the inner part of the temple where Nobunaga stands. I am taking Katsuie from the point right as Masamune's hand slips from his shoulder, spurring him on to finally take his life into his own hands.

Personality:
Katsuie is a man who has fallen from grace and who is keenly aware that he has no one to blame for it but himself. However, it is strange that he's fallen as far as he has, considering the sort of person he is. Katsuie is very passive, to the point of being withdrawn. He very rarely makes direct eye contact, often looking away or looking at someone out of the corner of his eye when they speak to him. He relies strongly on others to direct him and set the path that he is to follow. He is content to serve as a vassal, following the orders he is given without complaint. After he falls out of favor within the Oda army, he does not leave and instead chooses to suffer daily abuse and mistreatment from the generals that outrank him and even the soldiers who don't. He never even seems to consider leaving until someone encourages him (or in his Anime Route where Nobunaga actually throws him out.) He doesn't even question or attempt to disobey his orders, though there are moments where follows them to the letter and no more. He isn't a cruel man like Nobunaga is and while he doesn't have any compunctions against killing, he will occasionally show his opponents mercy if he isn't explicitly ordered to kill them. This is usually done when the person says something to him that affects him somehow, like Hideyoshi speaking to him of kingship. He sees values in others, and it may be that he feels that, as someone with little value of his own, he should not kill them because of it.

Generally when he appears in the game, Katsuie is quiet and withdrawn, often not speaking at all. When he does, what he says is usually bleak and depressing, occasionally becoming downright morbid. People around him consider him to be creepy and this is largely why. He's like half an existence, trailing along with the Oda army whether they like it or not (usually not.), not seeing a self beyond his orders. At one point when Sakon is babbling away at him, he is very rattled and confused by it, saying that no one has ever spoken to him in a friendly way before. Even the woman he loves doesn't immediately recognize his name when someone speaks of him to her. While he probably never pushed his suit with her, he has been her brother's subordinate for quite some time and no doubt has met her in person more than once. Whether he's never managed to make friends or make human connections in general is because of his attitude or his attitude has developed because he has no friends isn't entirely clear, but there's considerable support for the former.

There are times when Katsuie is not passive and that is when the more unpleasant parts of his personality really show through. It seems that he sees success as something you have to take and not gain through effort and self improvement. When he falls in love with Oichi, he doesn't even attempt to win her heart, he instead gets the idea in his head that if he can kill her brother and/or her husband, he can have her. He even accepts an army from the shogun for the purpose rather than trying to find men who will follow him. This happens a second time in his Anime Route when Hideyoshi tells him he can claim kingship by setting aside his past. To Katsuie, this means killing just about everyone he's ever had a significant relationship with. Rather than interpreting those words to mean putting what has happened to him behind him and moving forward to with his life, which would require effort and growth on Katsuie's part, he chooses instead to take it to mean removing everyone from his path so he no longer has to deal with them at all. He also can't bear to see others succeed where he failed for the same reason. He reacts violently to Masamune proclaiming himself to be a king because that was a title Katsuie could not successfully claim for himself. He begs him not to even try because it would mean taking something for himself that Katsuie feels is beyond his own grasp. It is petty, even childish, and it almost seems like he thinks that success is a finite thing that only so many people can have.

The upside to Katsuie's general passivity and reliance on others is that positive influences can have a huge effect on him. When Masamune takes him under his wing, he is so moved by it that he cries. Even though he's visibly trembling when Masamune brings him along to face Nobunaga, having a positive, supportive presence at his back is enough for him to overcome his passivity and face his demons head on. Masamune recognizes this in a different route in the game as well. He says that what Katsuie truly needs to get him moving and get his soul burning is a true rival. This view is supported by the change in Katsuie when he meets Sakon and in any stage in the game when the two of them are together. When he has Sakon to fight against, he becomes much more assertive and forceful. The volume of his voice increases, he largely drops polite speech, and he becomes much more decisive when he gives orders. This effect probably isn't limited to Sakon, it's only that Sakon is the first to bring it about. If Katsuie can find someone outgoing who can force themselves into his gloomy little bubble, he'll gladly latch on to them and leave his depressed shell behind.
